MUSIC AND MOVEMENT IN KINDERGARTEN
Music and Movement is a wonderful way to begin to expose our youngest learners to reading with the use of song and music.
Music and Movement in our classroom may include echo reading (students echoing the words after the teacher), choral reading (students reading at the same time as the teacher), or fill in the gap reading (teacher reading the majority of the text and then pausing for students to fill in and say rhyming words or other predictable words in the story). All of these ways of reading are ways to encourage early reading enjoyment and success with a high level of teacher support. During Music and Movement, students listen to a song and learn the actions. The text is created for them, placed in their Shared Reading Folder and used in different ways, depending on the Next Steps for Learning. For example, some children may build schema and oral language skills by focusing on making personal connections to the text. Some children may be asked to circle the pictures in order to help them decode new words. Some children may be asked to circle the first letter of their name and some may circle all of the letters in their name. Some may look for two or three letter words, and some may search for high frequency sight words found on our Word Wall. Some children may explore the sound of text and might be asked to circle all of the words that start with the same sound or find all of the rhyming words in the poem. Some children may be asked to determine the number of claps (syllables) in a word. During Shared Reading students are learning about Concepts of Print as well as the following:
